Garnock win Ayshire Schools Under 14 Cup

The Garnock Academy Under 14 football team were successful in winning 4 –3 against Auchinleck Academy in the final of the Ayrshire Schools Cup at Dam Park, Ayr on Monday 12th May.
On a cold evening with a stiff breeze, the Garnock team opted to play with the wind in the first half. Garnock made most of the early running, before conceding two quick goals to Auchinleck who made the most of two quick breaks. Garnock pulled one goal back and then equalised, both Garnock goals coming in the last four minutes of the first half.
After the break, Garnock scored after three minutes, taking them into the lead for the first time. The game swung to and fro for the next twenty minutes with no further score, despite close calls at both ends. Auchinleck equalised six minutes from time from a brilliant free kick from well outside the penalty area. On the restart, Garnock pressed back hard, winning a corner, which was well placed into the area. After a brief scramble, the ball ended up in the Auchinleck net, giving Garnock the lead with two minutes left to play. Auchinleck made the most of the dying minutes, winning another free kick just outside the penalty area, followed by a corner and a shot which hit the upright in the closing seconds of the game. The final score 4 –3 to Garnock was well earned.
Congratulations to the players, and to Mr D Hercus who coached the team through the season. Thanks also to Mrs E Hercus, our school Sports Coordinator.
