Garnock Academy Thanks Charity
Garnock Academy recently presented a cheque to the charity Ayrshire Cancer Support in thanks and recognition for the help given to a much respected teacher, the late Mr. Iain McEwan, and his family. The collection was organised by Head Girl and Boy and the sum of £1350 was raised by both staff and pupils.

Chief Executive of Ayrshire Cancer Support, John Beck (centre) received the cheque on behalf of the charity. He thanked the school for its “very generous donation” while gifting Ayrshire Cancer Support key-rings and badges for the pupils.
The services provided free by Ayrshire Cancer Support were praised by Mrs McEwan. She highlighted not only the convenient transport provided but also the essential palliative care and advice which was so supportive to the whole family during Iain’s illness.
Iain McEwan was a popular teacher who brought a sharp intellect and inventiveness to his teaching, coupled with a sense of humour and dedication. It was these latter qualities combined with his courage which became so apparent in his determination to remain at work even in the latter stages of his illness.
He particularly enjoyed imparting his own creative writing skills to pupils and, as a tribute to him, a memorial silver quaich will be awarded annually by Garnock Academy to the senior pupil who has excelled in creative writing.
